This month we present you the appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses, a terroir where white wines of great minerality and freshness express themselves; and structured red wines, with firm tannins.

A small village that has all the makings of a big one

At the gates of the Côte de Beaune, the small appellation of Pernand-Vergelesses has long lived in the shadow of the great appellations that surround it, notably that of its illustrious neighbor, Aloxe-Corton. Today its popularity is growing among wine lovers who are on the lookout for nice discoveries.

Pernand-Vergelesses is one of the most beautiful villages of the Côte with its sloping streets, its old train station, its springs and its many wash houses but it is also one of the oldest, our ancestors Calètes-Eduens (people of the Celtic Gaul) named this place blessed by the Gods “NAN” which designated the “Source”.

The production area of the appellation includes 3 Grands Crus and 8 climats classified as Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru: Sous Frétille (white wines only), Clos Berhet (white wines only), Clos du Village (white wines only), Creux de la Net, En Caradeux, Ile des Vergelesses, Les Fichots, Les Vergelesses.

The vineyard of Pernand Vergelesses extends over 145 hectares, located at the back of the mountain of Corton. On the upper part of the vineyard, on the edge of the forest, there are steep slopes up to 335 meters of altitude. The soils are rich and composed of white marl, very calcareous, where the Chardonnay grape is particularly appreciated.

Further down, we find soils where the pinot noir is favored. The soils are less steep, red and very calcareous, with ferruginous clays.

On the lower slopes, you will find the slopes of the Premiers Crus with soils composed of yellow limestone from the Callovian period, reminiscent of those of the Côte de Nuits.

Most of the vines are exposed to the east, the south and some to the north-east.
